I'll be speaking at GDC China in Shanghai this year, which should be both very interesting and fun. The Chinese market is not only growing very rapidly, it can also foreshadow game trends that spread elsewhere in the world.
They have simultaneous translation for both Chinese and English speakers in every session, which opens the entire agenda to everyone without the lost time involved in sequential translation.
My topic for the session will be "The Designer's Dilemma: How Do We Predict the Future?" Everywhere I travel in the world I'm always being asked "What's the next big thing in the games market?" If we could all easily figure out the answer we'd all be on the right platforms and in the right genres the moment they emerged, but of course it's not that easy.
In this session I'll be sharing ideas I learned from mentors and friends in other creative media, including the music business, fashion design and business consulting.
